Gift card balances are restored automatically when an order is refunded

When an order paid with a Cardivo gift card is refunded on Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe or Eventbrite, the amount goes back on the gift card automatically.

Written by Roohbir

When a customer pays for an order with a Cardivo gift card and you later refund that order, Cardivo puts the amount they used back on their gift card automatically. They can use it again straight away.

There's nothing to switch on. It works on these redemption channels:

  • Shopify

  • WooCommerce (plugin version 0.7 or later)

  • Stripe Checkout and Stripe payment links

  • Eventbrite

How it works on each channel

Shopify: when you refund an order back to the gift card in Shopify, the refunded amount goes back on the Cardivo gift card. This works for full and partial refunds.

WooCommerce: when you fully refund an order that used a gift card, the gift card amount used on that order is restored. Partial refunds don't change the gift card balance. This needs version 0.7 or later of our WordPress plugin, which you can download here. See the WooCommerce setup guide for how to install it.

Stripe Checkout and payment links: when a one-time payment that used a gift card is fully refunded in Stripe, the gift card amount is restored. Partial refunds don't change the gift card balance. Gift cards used on subscriptions aren't restored, because their balance has already moved to the customer's Stripe credit balance (see subscription redemption behavior).

Eventbrite: when you refund the whole order, or the ticket the gift card was used on, the gift card amount goes back on the card.

What you and your customers will see

The refund shows in the transaction history on the gift card page, for example "+$60 balance refunded via Shopify". The original redemption stays in the history too, so you and your customer can see exactly what happened.

If the gift card had been fully used, it moves from Completed back to Active. See Gift card statuses in Cardivo for more on each status.

The new balance is synced across every redemption channel you use, so the gift card can be redeemed anywhere again.

Good to know

  • The amount restored is never more than the gift card paid on that order, and each refund is only restored once.

  • If the gift card has expired, the balance is restored but the gift card stays expired.

  • Manual redemptions and redemptions on other channels, such as Paythen or Zapier, aren't restored automatically.
