Eventbrite gift cards integration: Overview and step-by-step setup guide

How to connect Eventbrite to Cardivo and let your customers redeem gift cards for your Eventbrite events - automated support for multiple currencies, and multiple redemption platforms.

Written by Roohbir

Sell tickets on Eventbrite? You can let your customers redeem their Cardivo gift cards directly at Eventbrite checkout. Once connected, your gift cards sync to your Eventbrite events automatically and balances stay up to date in both places, with no manual work needed.

How it works

When you connect Eventbrite, Cardivo adds each of your active gift cards as a promo code on your upcoming Eventbrite events behind the scenes. When you publish a new event, your gift cards are added to it automatically too.

At checkout, your customer simply enters their gift card number in the promo code field on your event's checkout page, and their gift card balance is applied to their order.

Cardivo then records the redemption and updates the gift card's remaining balance everywhere you use Cardivo.

A few things worth knowing about how it works as well as some Eventbrite limitations:

  • Currencies are matched automatically
A gift card can be redeemed on any Eventbrite event in the same currency as the gift card. So if you sell gift cards in both AUD and USD, your AUD gift cards will work on your AUD events and your USD gift cards will work on your USD events.

  • Partial redemptions work
If a customer's order costs less than their gift card balance, the remaining balance stays on the gift card and can be used again later, on Eventbrite or anywhere else you accept Cardivo gift cards.

  • One ticket quantity, AND one ticket type per redemption
A gift card applies to one ticket per order, and your customer can only select one ticket type (not a mix of ticket types) when redeeming a gift card and only one actual ticket. Any leftover balance can be used on future orders. This is a limitation of how Eventbrite handles promotion codes.

If a customer wanted to buy multiple tickets with gift card redemptions, they will need to put in multiple separate orders.

  • One Eventbrite account per Cardivo account
You can connect a single Eventbrite account to your Cardivo account.

  • Expiry dates and statuses carry over
If a gift card has an expiry date, it stops working on Eventbrite when it expires. If you freeze or block a gift card in Cardivo, it stops working on Eventbrite too. This is the same across all Cardivo redemption channels – you get one easy place to control your gift card.

  • Refunds restore the balance. If you refund an Eventbrite order that was paid with a gift card, the redeemed amount of the gift goes back onto the gift card automatically. You (and the gift card holder) can see this on the gift card page.

Step by step setup

Log in to your Eventbrite account in a separate browser tab before you begin. If you're not already logged in to Eventbrite, the connection will fail with an error. This is an Eventbrite bug but easily avoided if you log in to Eventbrite first, then begin the connection from Cardivo.

  1. Log in to your Eventbrite account in a new tab before you start the connection process in Cardivo.

  2. Then in a new tab, while keeping Eventbrite open in the background, log in to your Cardivo account and go to Settings > Integrations

  3. Scroll down to the Eventbrite section and click CONNECT SECURELY.

  4. You'll be taken to Eventbrite, where you'll be asked to authorize Cardivo to access your Eventbrite account. Click Allow.

  5. After authorizing, you'll be redirected back to your Cardivo Integrations tab with a confirmation message: "Your Eventbrite account is now connected to Cardivo." The Eventbrite section will now show your connected Eventbrite organization name.

That's it! 🎉

As soon as you connect, all of your existing active and scheduled gift cards are sycned to your Eventbrite, and every new gift card sold after that syncs within a few seconds of becoming active.

Events you publish later get your gift cards synced automatically, so there's nothing to configure on individual events.

We sync gift cards at an event-level instead of an account-level so we can automatically handle different currencies. If you sell gift cards in multiple currencies, and have events in multiple currencies, only gift cards matching the event currency will be redeemable on each event.

If you ever want to disconnect, you can do this directly in Eventbrite or ask us to assist via the chat icon.

How your customers redeem a Cardivo gift card on Eventbrite

  1. Your customer picks their ticket on your Eventbrite event page and goes to checkout. They can select one ticket type and one ticket quantity per checkout involving a gift card redemption. This is a limitation with Eventbrite.

  2. In the promo code field, they enter their Cardivo gift card number (CARDIVOXXXXXXXX)

  3. Their gift card balance is applied to the order. If the ticket costs more than the balance, they pay the difference as usual. If it costs less, the leftover balance stays on the gift card.

The gift card needs to match the event's currency. An AUD gift card works on AUD events, a USD gift card works on USD events, and so on.

Tracking redemptions in Cardivo

Every Eventbrite redemption appears on the gift card's details page in your Cardivo account, showing the event name, a link to the event, and the Eventbrite order number.

The gift card's balance updates automatically, and when the balance reaches zero the gift card is marked as completed and can't be used again. For a gift card redeemed across multiple orders, you'll see a line item for each redemption.

Refunds

If you refund an Eventbrite order that used a gift card, Cardivo puts the redeemed amount back onto the gift card automatically. If you refund the whole order, the full amount is restored.

If you refund only some of the tickets in an order, the amount is restored for the ticket that used the gift card. The refund appears on the gift card's details page, and the restored balance can be used again on Eventbrite or anywhere else you accept Cardivo gift cards. If the gift card had been fully used (and hasn't expired), it becomes active again.

Error messages

When connecting, if you see "Something went wrong with the authorization"

This usually means you weren't logged in to Eventbrite when you clicked CONNECT SECURELY, or the authorization expired. Log in to Eventbrite in another tab, leave it open, then try connecting to Cardivo via the setup steps shown earlier in this article.

A gift card isn't accepted at checkout

Check that the gift card is in the same currency as the event, that it's active with a balance left and hasn't expired, and that the event is published and hasn't ended. If all of that looks right, ask us via the chat icon and we'll take a look.

Disconnecting Eventbrite from Cardivo

You can disconnect Cardivo any time from your Eventbrite account settings via app extensions, or just ask us via the chat icon and we'll take care of it.
